I've made a few of these "motivational posters", but I felt the need to share this one.

So the iPad was announced last week. I, like most tech geeks, have been waiting for this announcement, wondering what Apple had up it's sleeve. Just about everyone knew it was a tablet computer, but everyone expected Apple to reinvent the wheel here.

Well I can say that from what I've seen, they fail. Miserably.

Where do I fucking start? How about the fact that this:

looks a HELL of a lot like THIS:

Yeah. That's right. It's a giant fucking iPod Touch. It doesn't run OSX, but a bigger version of the iphone OS.

Okay, so maybe that's not too much of a problem. Except that:

1) There's no multitasking. Perhaps this is something that Apple will allow in the future. I imagine that you'll be able to listen to music while you run other programs, but that's about it. Okay, so that's not TOO bad. You can get away with it on the ipod/iphone.

2)No Keyboard. You instead have a virtual keyboard like on the iphone/ipod touch. Okay, this is a major one for me. With my ipod, I use my thumbs for typing in landscape and my finger for typing in portrait. It works pretty well. Now how the hell am I expected to type on this thing? Lay it flat on a surface and use it like a regular keyboard? Stand it vertical and use it like I do my ipod? What the hell? Oh, but thank GOD that Apple is willing to sell me a keyboard/dock for only $70. Thank YOU Apple.

3) No USB. Um. What? No USB ports at ALL? What is this? 1994?

4)No Flash. Y'know Apple....you MIGHT have wanted to settle things with Adobe before you release something like this. Sure I can surf the internet on this thing, but how valuable is that when half of it is crippled?

The pricing starts at 499 for a 16GB model. That's not too bad really, as most people were expecting it to be just under $1000. However that's for wifi only. Adding 3G costs 130 dollars more. I was initially pretty harsh about this, but I've since calmed down slightly about it. Wifi should be good for most people.

Oh, and have I mentioned that this thing is marketed as between a netbook and a laptop. Okay, not this is where it starts to get stupid. I can buy a netbook that does a shitload more than this for a lot less. For $570 (I'm adding a keyboard, since I doubt many will get one without it) I can get a full LAPTOP that blows this thing out of the water!

The main strength of this device though is that it looks to be a good e-reader. And that's what this thing really is. A glorified e-reader with some extras thrown in. And there are better readers out there.

It's ironic that most of my friends thought I would be excited about this product and were surprised that I shot it down in a blaze of mediocrity. Apple was being extremely lazy here in my opinion. If they came out with a functional tablet that ran OSX, then maybe I wouldn't be so harsh. However, this is just a blown up ipod touch! Now, I'm not an apple hater. I recently bought an ipod touch a few weeks ago, and I've owned an iBook in the past. I know Apple is capable of some sweet computers. However, this shit is just crazy. Steve Jobs unveiled this crippled device and then proceeded to act like he did us a huge favor by saying that it was much better than a netbook.

Steve? Apparently you and I have differentiating opinions on what constitutes as "better". Because if I had a choice whether to spend nearly 600 on this thing or a netbook/laptop, I would choose a laptop in a damn hurry. Even if I wasn't computer literate, I'd pick something functional over something that looks pretty.

Billy Mays was found dead in his home this morning. It's starting to become crazy how many people have died in the last week. This brings the celebrity count to 4. Two of them shocking (Billy Mays, Micheal Jackson), two of them sad but not surprising(Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett).

Did I wake up in the twilight zone or something?

Yeah, I know. I'm bad. I haven't blogged on here in over a year. I suppose I'm still debating which blogging service to settle down with. I've posted a few posts over on blogger. It looks pretty, but blogger doesn't seem to have the community aspect of livejournal.

I think in the end, I'll go with LJ. Simply because over on blogger, I feel like my blog is on a deserted island in the middle of the atlantic. Over here, I feel like my blog is in the middle of a sprawling metropolis.

And what can I say...I like crowds. :D

Just got home from Erie and let me say this was the WORST vacation of my life. Our hosts had a bunch of pets which caused my allergies to flare up. Plus I was bored out of my mind.

We had gone up because we were considering renting an apartment from them. Well we get there and the place is a piece of junk. The guy who owns it is a cable installer and decreed that there will be "no satellite dishes on my house". Why? Because he doesn't like them. Well that made an easy decision even easier because I have Dish Network and I won't break my commitment for cable.

But let me talk about our hosts. Without naming names, the guy is one of those "I'm better than all of you" types. That annoys me a bit, but his girlfriend is a "I'm better than all of you and I always get what I want" types, which is ten times worse. Not to mention that she's lazy as all hell and barely did anything while we were up there.

Now, on to Erie. Not to offend all of those who live there, but it's a pretty run down city. There's nothing really to do there and the jobs seem to be pitiful. Plus it's just all around ugly in my opinion. Once you get past the mall, you see that most of the city is falling apart. This is in comparasion to Pittsburgh, which isn't the best either, but from what I've seen is a beautiful city with a fair bit to do.

The only high point of the trip was seeing my best friend Nikkie. It's been years since we last saw each other face to face, so that was a nice part.

Anyway, that's the end of my rant. Next up I plan on talking about Final Fantasy IV.

So the harddrive in my laptop died, or rather, is in the process of dying. Windows stopped booting up because someone at microsoft had the BRILLIANT idea of setting the system to AUTOMATICALLY REBOOT during a stop error. I got the Stop Error during reboot. You can guess how that went. I couldn't even boot into safe mode.

So I said "fuck it" and install ubuntu. Now the problem with that is the fact that there were errors on the drive and so FSCK was forced to run at bootup. Okay, that's fine.

The next day, it was still running. After waiting half the day I took drastic measures. I was using my old desktop computer as a back up drive mostly. It would freeze at the xp login screen but we could still access the drive through the network. Well I wiped it clean and installed ubuntu on that. I didn't have anything of value on there and Ubuntu runs like a dream. The amusing thing is that both computers are compaqs, but the desktop is now 7 years old. The laptop is two.

Goes to show you that they don't build them like they used to.

It's raining......AGAIN. I think it's raied EVERY day this summer.

Still, I'm using this time to catch up with my gaming. Final Fantasy Tactics is taking up most of my time. Megaman Starforce 2 is another time waster. And I plan on writing up a review for that one too.

And I'm typing this up on my old imac with mac os 9. It's annoying that there aren't that many recent programs for classic. Even more annoying that there aren't any recent web browsers for it either. Anyone know of a browser better than IE 5.2, send it my way

Right now I'm fixing up this old computer. Listening to music and all that good stuff. Now that I don't have work, I have the free time to do stuff that I was putting off. Things like ripping my CD collection and joining last.fm. You know...making use of itunes and all that good stuff. Not only that, but I've had more time for gaming. Currently I'm playing Final Fantasy Tactics A2. I barely played FFT on the PSX and didn't really get into it on the GBA. However I'm totally into it on the DS and I have to wonder what the FUCK was I thinking by not giving this series a chance. I'll have a full review up later.
